Journalists are not known for their scientific acumen, but admittedly this time it could be an English failure.
Still, I’m blaming our public schools’ science programs.

I mean, it’s not a photo... it’s an artist’s interpretation of the Milky Way (I guess?), and it’s probably stock, but definitely not a photo.

It looks like a photo to me. How can you tell otherwise?

Maybe it’s a stock photo of a drawing?

I’d like to shake the hand of the photographer who left the galaxy to go take a picture of it

That looks like a stock photo of the Andromeda Galaxy. The Milky Way is a sprial galaxy with arms. Plus i t’d be really difficult to get a photo of the Milky Way from the perspective of that article’s stock photo !

I dunno. A lot of the people in the comments were saying it’s a photo of Andromeda. Most of the pics i’ve seen of interstellar objects are either artist’s intrepretations or highly-massaged false-color images, or even data-sets that are used to recreate an image (which, i mean, anything digital counts i guess?)
Either way, you’re correct, it’s definitely not a photo of the Milky Way.

I think that’s the case. We learned as kids that this galaxy in Andromeda is likely very much like our own, and so people use it as a stunt double for the Milky Way Galaxy. But when you’re talking science, accuracy means something, so that should have been in the figure legend somewhere.

Fake news! The Milky Way is now thought to be a barred spiral galaxy:

For what it’s worth: here’s an artist’s intrepretation of how large Andromeda would be in our sky , if it were much much brighter and if we could see it thru our atmosphere.

I think you're gonna get a lot of mileage out of this meme.

Sometimes even journalists find English challenging... for instance, if they'd simply remembered "image" when they typed "photograph", much trouble could have been avoided.
